Redesigning Reading Response Routines

Updated: Mar 26, 2022

March 15, 2022

Recently, I worked with a teacher who wanted to enhance her weekly reading response routine. She didn't want to rewrite the questions or throw out her textbooks, she just wanted to do something different with the weekly comprehension questions she asked students to answer. She felt she had fallen into a rut. Each Tuesday she would pass out a 10 question comprehension worksheet for students to complete independently at their desks. While her students had mastered the routine of sitting silently and answering the 10 questions before pulling out their independent reading book, there was something missing.

After taking some time to reflect, I came up with 6 routines I've done in my classroom to engage students in meaningful work using weekly comprehension questions. Each routine utilizes at least two of the 4 C's while providing students with the opportunity to develop skills beyond what they typically develop with written reading responses.
